What forms of payment are accepted?

What should I bring to my first personal training session? How do I prepare for my first session with a personal trainer?

Some key items to bring to your first personal training session:

  • a water bottle
  • proper workout attire (shorts, golf skirt, t shirt, tennis or weightlifting shoes, etc)
  • a great attitude
What does a typical personal training session look like?

A typical personal training session will consist of:

  • a short warm-up
  • a main strength movement (sometimes with a barbell) and some smaller accessory movements.
  • Depending on your goals there may be some plyometrics, abdominal work, and/or some conditioning work on a machine.
When do you need a personal trainer?

If you:

  • are thinking of beginning an exercise program (specifically if it involves resistance training) for the first time, or for the first time in a long time
  • are uncertain about what to do
  • have health and fitness goals but are uncertain about how to achieve them
  • are nervous or anxious when you think of going to the gym
  • have been injured before
  • are dealing with current pain or injury

Schedule a consultation with our physical trainers or an evaluation from one of our Doctors of Physical Therapy to best answer this question.

How long does it take to see results with a personal trainer?

Usually you will see some results of personal training within the first couple weeks – but this is highly dependent on what your goals are and what challenges you are facing.  For highly deconditioned bodies due to chronic illness, expect to proceed slowly and safely so you don’t end up in a painful flare cycle.

How many times a week should you do personal training?

How often you train will depend on your goals and level of current knowledge and training. For a novice, we recommend more than once per week for shorter training sessions to promote repetition and commit important lifting techniques to memory. Some patients with chronic illness may only be able to handle one short session per week at first, but can slowly add more short sessions per week with time.

Do you lose weight faster with a personal trainer?
  • You can lose weight faster by working with a personal trainer, but most importantly, our trainers help you to sustainably and healthily lose weight.
  • Our main focus at Beyond the Gym is to help you build a more functional and resilient body, and weight loss is only a small part of that.
  • Losing weight too fast can be detrimental to your health and only reinforce bad eating habits later on
  • Ultimately, the most important thing is our clients’ quality of life, their ability to function in life seamlessly without pain or limitation
  • Our gym is not where we train Olympic athletes or try to compete in bodybuilding. We are experts at the human body and its longevity and how to help someone live a more fulfilling and meaningful life with their health and fitness as a key component of their journey
What are the benefits of personal training with Beyond the Gym?
  • Safety – It helps to have a professional intently watching and making the necessary adjustments to not only your exercise technique, but your entire workout program as well.
  • Accountability – The concept of accountability is key with any endeavor, and your physical fitness is no different. Paying for coaching is the personification of the old saying “Put your money where your mouth is.” You’ll be more likely to show up on those days that you just don’t “feel” like working out, making progress you wouldn’t have made without an accountability partner.
  • Goal setting/achieving – Your personal trainer can help you to get to the core of WHY you sought out their assistance in the first place. Setting a deep, emotionally driven goal can help you identify unhealthy habits as well as healthier habits to replace less healthy ones.
  • Motivation – It can be difficult to truly push yourself on your own. When you put the programming into the hands of a professional, they can help you figure out just how far you can really go. Oftentimes a personal trainer can guide you to do things that you never thought possible for yourself.
  • Support SystemYour trainer won’t just be a source of motivation but a wonderful source of information that will help you approach your physical and nutritional health with a sense of clarity and confidence.
